Rashes during pregnancy can be really uncomfortable. At 18 weeks, a rash on the legs that is itchy and bumpy could be caused by several things, including:
Possible Causes:
- PUPPP (Pruritic Urticarial Papules and Plaques of Pregnancy) – usually happens later but can sometimes appear earlier.
- Hormonal changes – pregnancy affects skin sensitivity.
- Allergic reaction – to lotions, detergents, fabrics, etc.
- Heat rash – especially if it’s warm or humid.
- Eczema or dermatitis – which can flare up during pregnancy.
What You Can Do Now:
While waiting for an OB appointment, here are some things you can try at home for relief:
- Cool compresses – Applying a cold, wet cloth may help reduce itching and swelling.
- Oatmeal baths – Use colloidal oatmeal (like Aveeno) in a lukewarm bath to soothe the skin.
- Moisturizers – Use unscented, hypoallergenic lotion (like CeraVe or Eucerin).
- Hydrocortisone cream (1%) – Can be used sparingly for itching. It’s generally considered safe in small amounts during pregnancy, but consult a pharmacist or doctor if unsure.
- Avoid irritants – Fragranced body washes, laundry detergent, tight clothing, etc.
- Stay cool – Heat can make itching worse.
When to Seek Care Urgently:
- If the rash spreads rapidly
- You develop a fever
- You notice blisters or open sores
- You feel very unwell or dizzy
You might also consider calling your OB’s office and asking to speak with a nurse, who can often give advice or fit you in sooner.
