Childhood is a time attached. Do you know?

Healthy

In the old days, we were poor, there were few toys to buy with money, the caterpillar nest helped our childhood to be somewhat fun after a day of school.
In the past, we often saw caterpillars hanging on leaves. Catch them and tease the caterpillar inside the cocoon. The caterpillar had a round, plump, shiny brown head. Cut off both ends, take out the caterpillar, squeeze the small head, attach it to the papaya stem and blow loudly. Wrap it around a wild pandan leaf and make a loud sound like a trumpet.
But when I grew up, I realized that this was a very harmful pest.

The main and dangerous pests on acacia trees include small trumpet worms, termites, gray-banded brown worms, powdery mildew, anthracnose, black stem disease, sooty mold, and pink mold.

Here are the characteristics and prevention measures for local reference and application.

There are up to 30 species of Acacia auriculiformis leaf-eating worms belonging to 14 families and 3 different insect orders, of which the Lepidoptera has the most families (9/14 families) and species (23/30 species).

The 2 families with many leaf-eating worms are the Noctuidae (6 species) and the Psychidae (5 species). Of the 30 leaf-eating worms mentioned above, 4 species have had outbreaks at different levels, the most dangerous being the brown worms, gray-banded worms, and then the pagoda worms.

– Noctuidae pests: Can lay 1,500 – 2,000 eggs, mature larvae are 45 – 70 mm in size, yellowish brown to dark brown, moving like inchworms: Anomis fulvida larvae differ from Speiredonia retorta Linnaeus larvae in that they are darker brown and shorter in size; the underside of the abdomen has a black streak running from the thorax to the 10th abdominal segment, while Speiredoina retorta has distinct circular black streaks in the middle of the segment; the head of A.fulvida has 2 white dots.

Speiredonia retorta has gray stripes running along the body. Young larvae eat young leaves, later instars eat young and old leaves, larvae often choose the leaf tip to eat first.

They feed from 6:30 p.m. to early the next morning, at around 4:30 a.m. the larvae crawl down to lie in cracks in the bark in an area 1 – 2 m above the ground or hide under dry acacia leaves in an area around the base of the tree with a radius of 0.5 – 1 m.

Among the leaf-eating worms, brown worms are the most dangerous. Brown worms and gray-banded worms often cause damage together and have very similar habits. The development time of the first generation of brown worms is 20 – 28 days, the second generation is 7 – 10 days and the fourth generation is 9 – 12 days. The larvae pupate right on the ground or under dry leaves.

– Small trumpet worms (Acanthopsyche sp) belong to the family Psychidae, order Lepidoptera. Adult females are 13 – 23 mm long, pale yellow, with a small head with a pair of spines, a slightly curved back, and a brown stripe in the middle. Adult males are 11 – 15 mm long, with a wingspan of 28 – 33 mm, and wings are grayish brown to yellowish brown. Females lay 100 – 270 oval eggs 0.6 mm long, 0.4 mm wide, and grayish white.

The older larvae have grayish brown heads and abdomens, with scattered black dots on the body. The larvae live in bags. The bags (trumpets) are grayish white. The pupae are dark brown and slightly spindle-shaped, the females are 13 – 20 mm long, the males are 11 – 13 mm.

– Habits and damage: The trumpet worm often causes serious damage to Acacia mangium, cinnamon and other forestry trees… at different ages. The trumpet worm causes damage to the leaves by causing dry and punctured spots, losing the ability to photosynthesize, and the trees become stunted.

Larvae from the 1st to 3rd instars only eat the epidermis of the leaves, the later instars eat holes in the leaves or eat the entire leaf, leaving only the veins. In places with high density (thousands of them on the tree), they cause the acacia to lose its leaves. If not prevented in time, the tree will die.

Every year, there is a generation of caterpillars that overwinter after causing damage and then pupate en masse in October – November. From mid-February to early March, they hatch and lay eggs. The larvae hatch and appear en masse in mid-March and early April, causing serious damage from April to September.

– Management of Acacia auriculiformis leaf-eating caterpillars: The most important issue in management is to do a good job of investigating and monitoring pests to promptly make appropriate decisions. Because brown caterpillars and gray-banded caterpillars have the characteristic of gathering at the base of the tree and the trunk during the day, it is necessary to pay attention to investigating the base of the tree and the trunk combined with observing the canopy to find cocoons.

Time to pay attention is from May to November. Forests aged 4 – 7 years, located in areas with an altitude of less than 200 m and mature forests for exploitation should be selected to set up survey points, about every 20 – 30 ha, choose 1 point and conduct a survey of 5 – 10 trees at each point.

When seeing the density of Noctuidae family 5 larvae/tree, the density of trumpet bag 20 bags/tree, it is necessary to immediately take measures to catch and kill. It is necessary to do a good job of forest care and protect natural enemies. It is possible to use pesticides with toxic effects, contact. Some pesticides that have been used effectively are Sumithion 50EC or Ofatox, KARATE 2.5EC, Trebon.

Use sticky rings, toxic rings to prevent brown worms and gray-banded worms from moving back and forth between the base and canopy of trees, especially in areas where pesticides cannot be used.

Because the worms are in the trumpet (bag), it is very difficult to prevent. When detecting the place where the epidemic starts, it is necessary to organize a regional investigation to determine the exact epidemic and the density of worms on the tree as well as determine the correct age of the harmful worms to direct the prevention and control by the following measures: Picking trumpets (bags) by hand in places with low density; spraying low-toxicity chemicals (only used when the outbreak occurs when the larvae are at age 3, in places with very high density).

It is recommended to use microbial pesticides such as Bt, Boverit fungus, Mat fungus… to spray for prevention and control right from the start to supplement the natural acacia forest with useful sources of microorganisms.
